A sewing studio located in the delightful Mt. Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia.
Handcraft Workshop teaches the joy of sewing and other handcrafts to children and adults in its modern sewing studio. The sewing classes offered by Handcraft Workshop are designed for students with skill levels ranging from the very beginner to advanced.
Handcraft Workshop is the dream of Heather Hutchison Harris. She has been sewing for most of her adult life. Prior to opening the studio, Heather was a teacher in the Philadelphia School District and had a great idea: Why not combine her love of teaching and her love of sewing? She told her husband Andre about the idea and the two decided to do something crazy together and go for it. After two years and a lot of hard work, Handcraft Workshop opened its doors in December 2013. The studio is a place for people to discover the joy and satisfaction of making something tangible by hand, for members of the sewing community to gather and meet, and for people of all ages to have fun in a creative workspace.
Heather is a life-long Philadelphia resident. She is a former elementary school teacher and has used her experience and knowledge of educational instruction as well as her personal sewing and crafting skills to design Handcraft Workshop’s classes. In addition to sewing, Heather enjoys knitting, crocheting, needle felting, embroidery, quilting, and cross stitch. When she retires, Heather plans to spend her days doing all of those things on a beach somewhere.
Andre moved to Philadelphia to attend college and decided to make it his home. Heather proved that she can teach anybody to use a sewing machine by teaching him. He hopes to use his skills to make a Messenger bag and a fine selection of ties. Andre works in higher education IT and moonlights in the studio when he can.
In their free time, Heather and Andre spend their time relaxing with their dog, Sirius, who just happens to be the best dog in the world. He’s from a rescue and is just the sweetest pup. If you are interested in getting a dog, you should consider rescuing one, too!
